Redistricting plan won't include central pre-K and K-8 innovation school

Superintendent of Schools Debra Livingston today said the district will no longer pursue the K-8 innovation school concept that would include major changes to Southside Middle School and Jewett Street School. In a letter to parents of Jewett Street students, Dr. Livingston said she carefully considered all of the input she received after presenting the options of establishing a pre-K center at Jewett and moving K-5 students to Southside with the middle school grades.

“The Jewett Street School community is passionate about its children and learning environment,” said Dr. Livingston. “We are fortunate that the parents care as much as they do, and their points of view are important.”

The innovation school proposal was intended to create classrooms in other schools throughout the district to relieve overcrowding. With that in mind, the superintendent and other administrators will continue to develop a redistricting plan that will eliminate portables in the district and fully utilize the capacity of every school building.

In the fall of 2014, presentations are planned at schools across the district to gain input and ideas about the best way to redistrict its schools for the benefit of children citywide.

WANTED: Community professionals to participate in Career Day

On Wednesday, March 29, 2017, Manchester High School West is hosting a school-wide Career Day. The structure will be different from similar events that often follow a "career fair"-type format in which professionals representing various fields set up displays and wait to be approached by interested students. At West, every teacher will be matched with a guest speaker related to his or her subject area. For example, in the math department, one teacher may host an accountant while other math teachers host a stockbroker or a carpenter. Students will follow their regular schedules and be introduced to a different career field with each class change. Speakers are asked to give a hands-on or interactive presentation to the classes they meet. West is offering full-day and half-day sessions for interested professionals. Lunch will be provided in all sessions. Full day. 7:15 am - 3:00 pm Morning only, 7:l5 am - 11:30 am Afternoon only, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm Members of the com...
