Dear Manchester School District Employees, We, the Parker Varney 5th Graders, would like to say thank you for the support that you have given us for our project based learning unit -- a fundraiser for the Liberty House transitional shelter for Veterans. The district-wide Employee Jeans Day raised $4,000.  We presented our donations to the Director of the Liberty House at a holiday luncheon, which took place at Manchester School of Technology. The veterans who were in attendance were overwhelmed with the support and especially liked the homemade snowmen filled with daily care items.  WMUR  broadcast coverage of the celebration of our collective efforts. What does it take to raise $6,000 in under three weeks? The fifth graders at Parker-Varney Elementary School proved it can be done with hard work and focus on a cause. They held several fundraisers for Liberty House, a transitional housing community for homeless American veterans in Manchester. The students' efforts included candy cane gram sales, a Polar Express movie night, a district-wide dress down day for all employees and staff, and collecting donations online through gofundme.com.  The fundraiser ended officially today when the Parker-Varney students hosted a luncheon at the Manchester School of Technology for the residents and staff of Liberty House. There, they sang Christmas carols, ate a delicious lunch prepared by MST Chef Mike Holfelder and his culinary arts students, and presented the executive director of Liberty House with a check and other gifts. Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive Once again the Barnes & Noble Annual Holiday Book Drive will benefit the Manchester School District! Last year Barnes & Noble collected and distributed over 3500 books to schools in the district. This year they'd like to expand that number to 4200 books! Please consider adding a requested book to your basket when making your book purchases at Barnes & Noble. A table will be set up in the cash wrap line near the registers with bookmarks designating books that schools have selected. The books will be collected and distributed weekly. Printed wish lists can also be found at Customer Service and in the Children's Department.

AdoptAClassroom.org pairs donors with teachers to provide resources and materials to meet the unique needs of their students. You can directly support a classroom in the Manchester School District! Visit AdoptAClassroom to search for a school in Manchester.  When a classroom receives a donation, 100 percent of the funds are immediately made available to the teacher through an online credit. Teachers can use those funds to shop online for classroom supplies from a network of more than 40 vendors on AdoptAClassroom.org; the supplies they choose are delivered directly to the teacher’s school. Donors receive personal feedback from the teacher about the impact of their donation, including an impact report that details how their contributions were used, item-by-item, dollar-for-dollar.

The Central Runs Road Race is an annual event sponsored by the Central High School student council. Each year the student body votes to decide which organization shall receive the funds raised. This year's proceeds will benefit the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth.

The students at Parker-Varney jumped with all their heart to raise nearly $4,500 for the American Heart Association. Classes learned about heart health for several weeks leading up to the AHA's Jump for Heart event on April 22.  More than 450 students and staff in grades pre-k through five participated in various jump rope activities led by Parker-Varney's City Year volunteers. Students collected donations from family and friends in exchange for jumping during the hour-long event. In the end, the students raised $4,485! Each student took home a jump rope from the Parker-Varney PTG.

Have a chili or chowder recipe that can't be beat? Put it to the test on Saturday, April 12 at Jewett Street School's Chili/Chowder Cook-Off!  There will be staff, parent, and student entry categories. The $5 admission fee per person will allow you to sample all the chilies and chowders.  All of the proceeds will benefit the family of Jaxson Field, a Jewett 4th grade student who is currently battling leukemia and being treated at Boston Children's Hospital. The cook-off takes place from noon to 4:00 pm. See you there!

Barnes & Noble on South Willow St. in Manchester is hosting a  book fair on Friday, April 11 from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm,  to benefit Highland-Goffe’s Falls Elementary School. People have the chance to purchase books specifically selected by HGF teachers from the "wish list" table. Those books will go to classroom libraries. In addition, a percentage of other purchases go toward HGF literacy programs.  Children’s activities will begin at 3:30.  Local children’s author Maryann Cocca-Leffler will be there at 4:00 pm to talk to students about writing and sign her books. Based on her book, “Mr. Tanen’s Ties," kids can enter a tie-coloring contest throughout the day.

A member of the Manchester School District family needs support! Please consider donating to or attending a silent auction next month to benefit Thomas Stevenson's family. The son of a Parkside Middle School teacher, three-year-old Thomas is currently being treated for leukemia. Thomas' grandparents are the assistant principal at Bakersville & Smyth Road and a teacher at Central High School. Check out the information in this flyer and join the fight if you can. 

Our school district's observance of Maggie Philbrook Day has been postponed until Friday, February 21. That's when all district staff and faculty can make a $5 donation in exchange for wearing jeans to school and work. All money collected across the district will go toward a charitable fund chosen by Maggie's family. Want to go a step further in honoring Maggie's memory? Her favorite color was purple. Wear purple shirts along with your jeans on February 21! 

Manchester Central High School's music honor society, "Tri-M,"  is holding a benefit concert on Tuesday, February 18. The admission fee is non-perishable food or a donation of money that will go directly to New Horizons. Please support our student musicians and a community organization that does so much good for those who need a helping hand! Hillside Middle School raised more than $5,000 in three weeks for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients campaign.  The Patients for Pennies campaign was run through the school’s enrichment classes, grades 6-8.  Students contributed spare change, and teachers collected it daily.  Hillside Middle School raised more money than any school this year, according to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and broke the New Hampshire school state record of $4,700.  “This was our first year running the Patients for Pennies campaign.  We felt it was another great opportunity to have our kids and teachers working together to help others.  We couldn't be more pleased," said Sara Loughlin, school coordinator of the project and teacher at Hillside.   Money raised will help thousands of children and adults in the fight against blood cancers like leukemia.   The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary ...

You can help 500 Manchester Middle School Students and Teacher/Chaperones see a performance of The Civil War , a Theatreworks show focused on the smaller stories of some of the soldiers who were caught up in the midst of the conflict. The performance takes place on Tuesday, February 4th at 10:00 AM at the Stockbridge Theatre at Pinkerton Academy . 500 free admissions have been generously donated to Expanding Students' Horizons for student distribution. But without the needed $1,200 for the twelve round trip buses we will not be able to accept all of the 500 free tickets. The Southside Middle School Library is having a Book Fair at the Barnes & Noble on South Willow St. on February 12 (snow date February 13). All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner for $10 on Tuesday, January 21, 2014! The Common Man’s Airport Diner in Manchester is hosting an all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper to assist the Manchester School of Technology (MST) in raising funds for student programs and activities. On Tuesday, January 21 from 4 – 7 p.m., diners who order the spaghetti supper, which includes spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, a salad and a non-alcoholic beverage, will be assisting the school’s fundraising efforts. Five dollars of every $10 meal sold will benefit MST’s programs. Tax and gratuity are not included in the dinner price. MST’s Culinary Program Director Mike Holfelder said the school has gone from offering vocational programs for juniors and seniors to being a full-time, four-year high school. This change has caused the need to build up reserves for student programs such as the yearbook committee, student council and other activities, said Holfelder.  Tickets are not needed for this event. ...

The Manchester Barnes and Noble book store at 1741 South Willow Street has chosen the Manchester School District to be the recipient of its 2013 Holiday Book Drive. Look for displays at the front of the store in the check out area for "wish list" books as well as suggested items for local schools. Making a donation is as easy as picking up a book and bringing it to the register and Barnes and Noble will deliver purchased books to schools. The holiday drive is taking place from now through December 24. School Book Fairs at Barnes and Noble Several schools are also holding Barnes and Nobles Book Fairs throughout the month of December.
