“Constitution Day” is observed in schools each year on September 17 with educational programs about the history and signing of the U.S. Constitution. To help celebrate Constitution Day, eight daily newspapers and the New Hampshire Supreme Court sponsor an annual essay contest for students in grades 5-12 on a topic related to our constitutional rights as citizens. Winning essays are published in the participating newspapers, and winners are invited to a special reception at the state Supreme Court and to the Nackey S. Loeb School of Communications First Amendment Awards. The 2014 essay question and other contest details are available on the  New Hampshire Department of Education  web site.

Moore*Mart , the non-profit organization that provides personal supplies to U.S. troops serving in the Middle East, is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a fun contest for school children. Students can submit their personally designed patriotic drawings and cards that will be sent to military service members in Iraq and Afghanistan. Three winning entries will be featured in Moore*Mart's tenth anniversary packing celebration this summer. Green Acres Elementary School was recognized today as having the largest participation in this year's Winning With Wellness program. Fourth and fifth graders in seven of Manchester's elementary schools took part in the program, sponsored by the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation and the Manchester Monarchs. Students used logbooks to track their healthy eating and physical activity progress over four weeks this winter. They learned about the importance of good nutrition, which includes restricting sugary beverages, exercising, and limiting screen time. Two hundred and fifty-six students in Manchester completed logbooks, with Green Acres at 67% participation out of 194 eligible students. To celebrate, Max the Monarch and representatives from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and the city's Health Department pres ented Green Acres health teacher Mrs. Gula with a trophy. Have a chili or chowder recipe that can't be beat? Put it to the test on Saturday, April 12 at Jewett Street School's Chili/Chowder Cook-Off!  There will be staff, parent, and student entry categories. The $5 admission fee per person will allow you to sample all the chilies and chowders.  All of the proceeds will benefit the family of Jaxson Field, a Jewett 4th grade student who is currently battling leukemia and being treated at Boston Children's Hospital. The cook-off takes place from noon to 4:00 pm. See you there!

The nomination deadline for outstanding elementary, grades K-6, mathematics and science (including computer science) teachers has been extended to  April 15, 2014 . The PAEMST are the nation's highest honors for K-12 teachers of mathematics and science.  Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.  Since 1983, more than 4,200 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession.  If you know great teachers, nominate them to join this prestigious network of professionals.  The nomination form should be completed early enough to ensure that the nominated teacher is given enough time to thoroughly prepare an application that reflects exemplary teaching prior to the application deadline. Students from the Manchester School of Technology are celebrating their medal-worthy accomplishments at the SkillsUSA New Hampshire Leadership competition this month. MST received three gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals in the categories of customer service, esthetics, job interview, job skills demonstration, and prepared speech. SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students who are enrolled in vocational training programs. MST sent a team to the state contest on  March 14 at the Seacoast School of Technology.
