AutoFair Automotive Group​, NBT Bank​, New Hampshire Fisher Cats​ mascot Fungo, Mayor Gatsas and Dr. Livingston visited Central, Memorial and West high schools this morning to draw names of students who are finalists in the running to win a new car! This is the fourth year “Make the Grade” will award a 2015 Hyundai Velostar donated by AutoFair to a junior or senior high school student who earns Honor Roll status the first, second and third quarters of the academic year. Out of more than 500 eligible entries, today, four names were drawn at random at each school. Those 12 students will attend the New Hampshire Fisher Cats game on June 5, when they will each receive a key and hope the one they hold starts the car. Manchester Memorial High School art teacher Lori Sweeney attended a National Art Education Association leadership conference in New Mexico and secured a grant from the internationally recognized education foundation, The Da Vinci Initiative , which works with art teachers from around the world to bring skill-based art education methods into K-12 classrooms. Lori Sweeney Jane Tentas With support from principal Arthur Adamakos, two other Memorial High School art teachers -- Jane Tentas and Marcia Fanaras Zito -- joined Sweeny to help orchestrate a two-day professional development workshop led by the well-known Boston School-style artist, Paul Ingbretson. He taught 20 art teachers from New Hampshire and Maine realism skills they could take back to their students. The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce is planning its third class of Educator Leadership, and the 2015-16 application is now available! Teachers, guidance counselors, subject area specialists, and others from the elementary, middle and high schools in Manchester are invited to apply for Educator Leadership. Graduates of the Educator Leadership inaugural class of 2015 The program creates closer alignment between business and education so that educators walk away with practical applications and a stronger understanding of where industry sectors are going and the knowledge necessary to better prepare students for careers in high growth industries.  Educator Leadership begins in October with a total of 8 sessions held from 3:30-5:45 p.m. in October, November, December, January, February, March, April and May. Last month we told you about Project PLAY NH, a non-profit organization founded by Central High School senior Kate Aiken and two friends from Bedford High School and Trinity High School. Together, they created Project PLAY to sponsor kids in greater Manchester who don't have the financial resources to play team sports. Local recreational teams, such as soccer and Little League, require registration fees. There's also equipment that families are required to provide on their own. When they can't afford it, Project PLAY can lend a hand. NECN took notice and featured Project PLAY in its "Making the Grade" segment. Take a look!

Central High School's Student Council is looking for support for its 3rd annual Central Runs charity event!  You can sponsor a student runner, donate to the event, or volunteer to work along the route. Just contact Jeff Howe by calling Central High School or emailing jhowe@mansd.org. All proceeds from the run will benefit  The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester , which provides services to many Central students and their families. Students can register to participate at school.

New Hampshire Public Radio visited Ms. Barden's kindergarten class at Beech Street School and produced an "audio postcard" to give the community a small of sample of the day in the life of kindergarten. Take a listen!

Beech Street Elementary School has received $7,000 from The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries to enhance its media center reading collection.  More than $875,000 is being distributed to 131 school libraries across the country this year; Beech Street is the only school in New Hampshire to receive one of the grants. “No matter what you want to be when you grow up -- a doctor or a lawyer, a senator, an artist, or a teacher -- reading will help you reach your goal," said Laura Bush. "By providing more schools with better reading materials, the Laura Bush Foundation helps students understand more of the world around them, and its limitless possibilities.” The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries provides grants to schools so that they can extend, update, and diversify the book and print collections in their libraries with the goal of encouraging students to develop a love of reading and learning. The Manchester Community Music School is proud to partner with the Manchester School District to offer after school small group music lessons for middle and high school students. Registration for the 2015-­‐2016 academic year is now open! Lessons will run once a week in 10-week sessions. Each lesson is 30 minutes long and will be scheduled between 3:00 and 6:00 pm at a Manchester school. Session 1: Week of September 14 - Week of November 16 Session 2: Week of November 30 - Week of February 15 Session 3: Week of February 29 - Week of May 9 Students may register for one session at a time or all three. Each session is $150.00. Students must have their own instruments to participate. MSD superintendent Debra Livingston, Chief Facilities Manager Kevin O'Maley, Hallsville principal Christi Michaud, former Hallsville principal Rachelle Otero, and clock restorer Phil D'Avanza accepted the 2015 Preservation Alliance Award on May 12  New Hampshire Preservation Alliance presented the City of Manchester and Manchester School District with a 2015 Preservation Achievement Award for last year's restoration of Hallsville School Clock and Tower.       The clock and bell atop Hallsville School were out of working order for 23 years before the school hosted a re-dedication of the building's clock tower in April 2014.  The Preservation Alliance is the statewide non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of New Hampshire’s historic buildings, landscapes and communities through leadership, education and advocacy. 

A new tool that makes it easier than ever for families and community members to determine their neighborhood schools is now online. No longer do our website visitors have to read maps and decipher district boundaries. Governor Maggie Hassan, inventor and FIRST  founder Dean Kamen, superintendent Debra Livingston, and other special guests visited the FIRST Junior STEAM Ahead fourth graders from Green Acres Elementary School on May 14. It was a chance for the children to show off what they've learned this year. During lessons that apply math, language arts and science concepts, students design, build, and program robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 and other elements.
