Dr. Martin first-ever recipient of Partner in Education award

The Manchester Education Association has named assistant superintendent Dr. Christine Martin the recipient of its new Partner in Education Award, as voted on unanimously by the MEA executive board.

Dr. Martin was honored for always making students her highest priority -- as a teacher, principal, and administrator.

In presenting Dr. Martin with the award, MEA president Sue Hannan said, "Chris has always preferred to collaborate rather than argue, and looks for creative ways to solve problems. She is that rare gem who attended school in the Manchester School District, and followed her calling to succeed at every level of educator in the district where she learned to love school."

Dr. Martin will celebrate 30 years in the Manchester School District in 2018.

Youth hockey tournament applications being accepted

Manchester’s Parks, Recreation & Cemetery Division is pleased to announce that the 2016 Clement M. Lemire Hockey Tournament will begin in March.  Named for the long-time Parks Superintendent who initiated the event, the tournament makes use of the city's two ice arenas to allow elementary and middle school students to compete in a fun city-wide event. The tournament will begin immediately following the conclusion of the high school season. Applications are currently being distributed to all public and parochial schools and is also available below.  The Tournament will have two age groups: elementary, consisting of 3rd , 4th and 5th grades; and middle school, for 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Applications must be returned to the schools by Thursday, February 18, 2016.  No applications will be accepted after this date. Principal McCafferty receives inaugural SNHU Loeffler Prize

Hillside Middle School principal Brendan McCafferty is the first ever recipient of Southern New Hampshire University's newly established Loeffler Prize, recognizing those who have unselfishly and generously contributed their time and talents for the enrichment of others and the betterment of their community. In the description of the award, SNHU says honorees set an example for the spirit of generosity, everyday contributions, sometime heroism, and perseverance. Mr. McCafferty was honored in part for his hard work to build a network of opportunities for his students across the city of Manchester. He has been an instrumental champion in the work of local nonprofit BRING IT!, an acronym of the program’s full name: “Bringing Refugees, Immigrants and Neighbors Gently Into Tomorrow.” An average of 100 kids attend the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions after school, which started at Hillside and is now also offered and hosted by the Middle School at Parkside.
