The nomination deadline for outstanding elementary, grades K-6, mathematics and science (including computer science) teachers has been extended to  April 15, 2014 . The PAEMST are the nation's highest honors for K-12 teachers of mathematics and science.  Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.  Since 1983, more than 4,200 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession.  If you know great teachers, nominate them to join this prestigious network of professionals.  The nomination form should be completed early enough to ensure that the nominated teacher is given enough time to thoroughly prepare an application that reflects exemplary teaching prior to the application deadline. The UNH STEM Discovery Lab was created in response to the growing need for STEM educated graduates. Students from the Manchester School of Technology are celebrating their medal-worthy accomplishments at the SkillsUSA New Hampshire Leadership competition this month. MST received three gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals in the categories of customer service, esthetics, job interview, job skills demonstration, and prepared speech. SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students who are enrolled in vocational training programs. MST sent a team to the state contest on  March 14 at the Seacoast School of Technology. The world's largest anti-bullying sign was created and displayed in the Las Vegas desert this past weekend -- and Manchester was part of it! Thousands of our students proudly sent their messages of encouragement on pieces of red paper that were included in the giant X constructed by volunteers rallied by New Hampshire's own Justin Spencer and his Legacy X organization. Manchester School District is presenting its  preliminary FY2015 budget  to the Board of School Committee on Monday, March 24. Also next week, the Board of School Committee will be hold a public hearing to hear comments from the community regarding the budget.  The hearing will be held in the Aldermanic Chambers of City Hall (3rd Floor) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27.

Parker-Varney Elementary School students were wowed by today's performance by  Amazing Hero Art's Rob Surette . In under an hour, Rob painted a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, one of American history's greatest heroes, as he inspired the kids with the message that they can be great, too. Now the school has a beautiful painting to hang on the wall to remind them of it!  Parker-Varney's School Improvement Grant funds made the show possible.

More children entering first grade and who need reading and writing support prior to the start of the new school year will have the opportunity to participate in the Manchester School District Ready for Success summer program, thanks to a grant awarded by the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation. Previously focused on students who attend Manchester’s Title I schools, which receive state and federal financial assistance to meet the needs of educationally at-risk students, Ready for Success is now available to incoming first graders from all 14 elementary schools. “Children in Manchester come to school from a variety of early education or home settings, and bring with them different levels of skills and readiness,” said Beth Shea, Ready for Success program coordinator, who also is a veteran kindergarten teacher at Northwest Elementary School. “Since 2004, Ready for Success has worked to give a boost in literacy during the summer to the students who will benefit from it.”...

The district's Middle School Innovation Team is seeking input from students, teachers, parents and community members about the middle school education experience in Manchester.  Please take the  online survey  for the opportunity to provide your thoughts and perspective on middle school priorities.  Middle school students across the city will take the survey in school this month.  The deadline for submitting your response is March 31.  Thank you for your participation!

Tim Harris's unique approach to customer service has earned him national attention. He can now add motivational speaker to his resume. He  shared his story  with students at McLaughlin Middle School on Tuesday.

Manchester's elementary schools will be accepting new student registrations next month. The enrollment form and other documents required for registration are available to be downloaded  online .  Children and parents may come in person on the dates below. Congratulations to Christine Brennan, who was named principal of Beech Street School at last night's Board of School Committee meeting. She succeeds Pat Snow, the director of the district's Innovation Zone. Christine takes the leadership role at Beech Street after serving as assistant principal there. The school is now looking to fill that position.

This year's school calendar includes 10 potential snow days that would not have to be made up. There have been five snow days and one early release so far. That puts us on track to end on the school year on schedule on June 12, 2014!

Registration forms  for the 2014-15 school year are available to be downloaded. Dates and times for kindergarten and first grade registration at all of the city's elementary schools will be announced this week.  Students must be 5 years old by SEPTEMBER 30 in order to register for kindergarten. Your child will also need to have a complete physical exam, or an appointment to have one, before starting school. 

In an effort to support our recycling efforts throughout the district the Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA) is offering the teachers, staff and students from the Manchester School District a reduced rate to attend this year's  33rd Annual Northeast Recycling Conference  and  5th Annual School Recycling Conference .  The events will be held on  June 9th and 10th  at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester. The NRRA is looking for at least one champion, or more, from each school to help work toward increasing recycling throughout the district.  This conference provides 2 full days of educational workshops and activities specifically tailored to school issues in recycling and the solid waste industry. Students at Manchester High School West gathered this morning to learn about the school’s Advanced Placement (AP) program and the opportunities that exist for their academic success. The 110 students from all four grades were invited to the breakfast event based on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) “AP Potential” tool that helps schools identify students who are likely to succeed in rigorous AP courses and exams. “We are thrilled with the fact that this number of students, all of whom have not enrolled in AP courses before, are eager to learn more about the courses and embrace the challenge they present,” said West principal Chris Motika. “The AP Potential is a valuable tool, and I am willing to bet that if all of our sophomores took the PSAT, we would have even more students seated here today.” The message for the morning was one of support, confidence and high expectations for learning.
